The James City County Sheriff Department work in conjunction with the Williamsburg. The responsibilities of the Sheriffs department include civil processing procedures, court room security, and the transportation of prisoners including juveniles. The James City County Sheriff Department along with the Williamsburg Police Department and the York County Sheriff's Department have a joint partnership under the Joint Area Project. The program required the three jurisdictions to undergo training in the operation and certification of Project Lifesaver. This program is also offered in cooperation with the Williamsburg Fire Department, which also has trained personnel on staff. Project Lifesaver's mission is to use technology in assisting those who care for victims of Alzheimer's and Related Mental Dysfunction Disorders (ARMD) and victims who become lost. Project Lifesaver places personalized radio transmitters on identified persons with ARMD. These transmitters assist care givers and local emergency agencies in locating those who cannot help themselves.
